Thursday 6 February 1958.  Airspeed Ambassador G-AZLU of BEA, having stopped at Munich to refuel on the way back from Belgrade, crashed in slush and snow while taking off to return to Manchester.  23 out of the 44 people on board were killed including many of the famous Manchester United football team.

Notes for G-AMAD

PK100183 One of 20 Ambassadors ordered by BEA in 1948 and operated as the “Elizabethan” class from 1952 to 1958.

PK100185 Converted to a flying horsebox G-AMAD cartwheeled on landing at Heathrow on 3 July 1968 and ended up in the new terminal 1 then under construction.  6 people and 8 horses killed.

Notes for G-AKBZ

Avro Tudor 5 G-AKBZ was originally built for British South American Airways and named “Star Falcon”.  Used as a fuel freighter during the Berlin Airlift. It was taken on by BOAC in 1949 but never used.  It was stored for almost 10 years at Stansted Airport and eventually scrapped in 1959.  Probably shot at an open day at Stansted.

Notes for EP-ADE Ex RAF MW295 - Ascalon II named after Churchill's personal aircraft. It retired from military service where it became G-APCA and later passed to Trans Mediterranean Airways of Lebanon OD-ACQ before going to Persian Air Services of Iran. On 15 July 1959 it tragically crashed near Kuwait City killing all 32 passengers and crew.

Notes for OD-ACQ Ex RAF MW295 - Ascalon II named after Churchill's personal aircraft. It retired from military service as was re-registered G-APCA with Field Aircraft Services of Britain before going to Trans Mediterranean Airways of Lebanon. It then went on to Persian Air Services of Iran as EP-ADE. 15 July 1959 the Avro York crashed near Kuwait City killing all 32 passengers and crew.
